Can I take your photo Madam?

Posted on: September 19, 2010

I was warned before i came to India that i would receive a lot of attention with being  an ‘English Rose’, blonde and fair, but i was not prepared for men taking photos of me in the street, and women staring at me in awe.

What tourists perhaps don’t realise, is that as soon as you get out of the tourist areas, down the back streets of Old Delhi the smell of rotting rubbish in your nose, mixed with the aroma of incense, is that you’re white, really white.

Nothing can beat that back street experience! Yes it is heart breaking when children tug on your arm asking for money for food, but if you offer them it they will turn their nose up, you can often see parents lurking in the background waiting to take the money. You have to remember in India every child has the right to a free education, they just oftn make more money on the streets.
