Friday 24th September ‘ENGLAND TEAM ARRIVE, DELHI BREATHES EASY’-Hindu times

Posted on: September 28, 2010

After three days away, Friday in Delhi begins  much as any previous day.  Until we finally receive the news we’ve been waiting for; the England team are due to arrive during the afternoon. India breathes a sigh of relief as the pictures of the England team finally in Delhi airport reach our screens.

After finally seeing pictures of the conditions in the Athlete Village released in the Hindu times, no one is surprised the team snub the village in favour if five star accommodation until Monday at the earliest, when officials are sure it is up to their standards. The pictures show ‘unusable toilets,’ and beds covered in mud, most likely from stray dogs. On our brief  to the gates of the village, the surrounding flooding is intense, so wet that the whole area resembles a lake. Only 409 flats out of the 1168 in the Athletes Village are ready.

With the games only nine days away and the conformation that it will go ahead, the atmosphere within Delhi has changed. A hubbub of excitement surrounds the High Commission offices, volunteers treading the pavement in official uniform and the sight of Westerners becoming less of  a surprise.

The Indian people finally reap the reward of staying continuously positive. They still maintain the opinion the games have been good in creating work and opportunities, and although things have gone wrong, some things like the epic amount of rainfall could not have been prevented.  All around Connult Place, the centre of new Delhi, a huge amount of work is still being undertaken day and night, nether the less, there is no doubt that it will be finished.
