Monday 27th September ‘Go visit the ‘marvellous’ Athletes Village’

Posted on: September 28, 2010

This is the week the Sheffield Hallam Volunteer Team has been waiting for. After two weeks of delays and setbacks, things seem to be finally moving forwards starting with a meeting with the Chairman of the games, Saresh Kalmadi.  Not India’s favourite of the Organising Team Committee.  This is a man, who has constantly shifted the blame from the committee, to the shoulders of construction workers and placed gagging orders on Athletes affected by shoddy workmanship.  The Hindu times commented that; ‘Organising Committee Chief Saresh Kalmadi, was more worried about adverse publicity than Athletes.’

Our meeting with him was an opportunity for our minds to be put at rest, questions answered and plans laid out. But with no brief we didn’t know what to expect. What we gained instead was Mr Kalmadi asking all of our names, telling us not to read the press, and go and visit the ‘marvellous’ Athletes Village. Disappointing to say the least, with the whole thing becoming what can only be described as a PR stunt with camera’s thrust in our faces at every turn.
